Don't start a job search without this book!
I was having a tough time updating my Resume after years out of the job hunt picture. I got this book by Tony Beshara, and have had a hard time putting it down. It has EVERYTHING you need to write one of the best possible Resumes, to help you get hired. Just the sample Resumes alone are worth the price of the book.If you can only afford one book for your job search, then this should be that book-Without the best Resume, you may not even get the interview. And of course if you get the interview, read "Acing the Interview", another excellent book.

Insider advice to what works
The first thing I did after reading Tony Beshara's Unbeatable Resumes was to dust off my own resume to see what I might do to improve it. What worked for me in the 90s is evidently passé now, as I quickly realized that a resume crafted 10 years ago won't cut it in today's employment marketplace. In previous years, many people rewrote their resumes in the popular functional resume format. Beshara notes that it is still an acceptable approach for some job seekers, such as those looking to land their first job or those reentering the workforce after a lapse of time, but he endorses the reverse chronological format as the best choice for everyone else. Using a functional resume may raise a flag that the candidate has something to hide that is best covered up by omitting a timeline. The author clearly lays out the reasons for this and other aspects of resume writing, based on his extensive career in finding jobs for others. In his role as a placement and...

Product Description

What does Tony Beshara do that most resume 'experts' don't? While the experts write resumes all day, Tony the veteran placement specialist featured regularly on the Dr. Phil show actually uses them to get people jobs. With "Unbeatable Resumes", Tony dissects and discusses real-life resumes for jobs in a wide range of industries from healthcare to banking, construction to technology, administration to sales and marketing, and more. The book shows readers how to build a powerful resume, utilize keywords effectively, use gaps and job changes to their advantage, and pair their resumes with concise, dynamic cover letters. He complements his expertise (he has personally placed more than 8,500 professionals) with the results of a survey of more than 3,000 managers, executives, HR specialists, and other hiring authorities about what gets resumes read, interviews granted, and jobs offered. Readers will learn: the critical components of well-written resume; how to ensure their resume actually gets read...by the right people; what employers look for, and what turns them off; how to customize a resume for a particular job; and, the truth about video resumes, job-search websites, and social networking sites like FaceBook, LinkedIn, and MySpace. "Unbeatable Resumes" shows job seekers of all types how to present themselves in the best possible light, for the best possible position. Top to learn more

Well, I can tell you this much.
I changed my resume to the format and content as suggested in this book and I've started getting phone screens and interviews with it. In the 14 weeks prior to making this change I wasn't getting much of anything.Yeah, it could be coincidence. And no, I'm not generally enamored of folks touted by Dr. Phil as experts in anything. I'm also not sold on the idea that 3000 businesses in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area are generally representative of the entire US hiring population. What I can tell you though, especially since the economy has made me into a semi-professional job hunter, is that I have seen a marked difference in response to this book's suggested format as compared to my previous resume format. And that the previous format was one that most other resume books and online resume advisers recommend. As always with these things, your mileage may vary.

Great Tips for Updating Your Resume
I've been freelancing as a writer for a few years now, but even so, I always try to keep my resumé up to date. I was a little concerned that with new technology, more emailing of resumés to potential employers, etc., that maybe I needed to get some advice. This book had great tips, great examples and answered my questions about how to discuss my freelance experience in a way to sell myself to corporate America. Mayer's suggestions for tailoring each resumé for each potential employer was something I hadn't thought of before. I thought the resumé was all about ME, but now I see it's about proving that I'm the best match for a job. If you're now or soon plan to be actively job seeking, this is a great investment to improve your chances of turning a resumé into an interview.

More than Resumes, Insights on Success
This book is awesome! Just started reading it and can't freakin' put it down! I think Richie has a great way of immediately capturing the attention of his readers by doing what any great story teller does, shares cool, relevant stories that really help to drive home important points. I love how he doesn't shy away from pointing out that its okay to want to make money, in fact its really important, but at the same time stresses the importance of making sure you find meaning in what you do and that you feel a definite passion and purpose with whatever it is you do. If you are in the boat of so many others these days of struggling to find a job or even simply looking to find more meaning in your work, this book will give you some great insight and perspective and is a breath of fresh air. When so many sources out there in the job market are simply giving the same old advice, Richie gives out some advice that is in this case anything but your typical "free advice". I will definitely...

Short, to the point advice.
His point about the "Resume being dead" is that businesses and people are more interested in what you can actually do for them, not in a list of things you done in the past. You need to have a good understanding of yourself and what you want, to make the advice in this book really work for you. I like that about it. How can you have a job you will love doing if you don't know what that is? My favorite piece of advice, and there were many, was his law of "Congruence": "Do work that is suited to your passion. Capture their minds by fitting a need. Congruent value is aligning the employer or clients need with your value added. Employers and clients are selfish, it's about them. They take the risks, it is their money, respect that. Be aware that needs change. Be agile." I think this is the heart of the book, understand yourself, understand what people are looking for, find where those two needs intersect. It's a quick, enjoyable read, but it takes time and thought to put the...

A Good Reference for Rusty Job Seekers
After many years at the same company, I'm on the job market and although I've been fairly conscientious about keeping my resume up to date, I haven't really had to test it in the marketplace. A review of the "Resumes for Dummies" book helped me to refine my job descriptions, incorporate more action oriented words and focus on the skills and jobs that are relevant to the type of position that I want to hold in the future.Like all "Dummies" books, this one is presented in a simple easy-to-read, well-organized format with large bulleted headlines and plenty of graphics and examples. Whether you read the whole book, or just refer to specific sections, this book has it all, including resume formats; how to present education, experience, skills, activities, organizations, etc.; good attention-grabbing words; getting rid of deadweight in the resume; going digital and distributing the resume; spin control against potential problems, such as too much or too little experience, gaps in...

Worth its weight in future paystubs
If nothing else, this book is beneficial because it gives the reader lots of ideas to borrow (Ok, steal, but that's why this book was written). I'm not very creative when it comes to laying the resume out, but the different possibilities gives me some options. It's important to not be too wordy in the resume, and Kennedy shows us what to emphasize. Her snappy writing style makes a mundane topic actually interesting. It's nice to know that I have this on my shelf in case I decide to go job-hunting in the future.
